Leiji Matsumoto Biography
Early life
Matsumoto’s father gave him a 35mm film projector when he was a little child. He was the middle child in a family of seven brothers. Matsumoto utilized the projector to see American cartoons when his nation was at war with the United States. He began to appreciate the writings of science fiction writers at this time, like Unno Juza and H. G. Wells. When he was 18 years old, he relocated to Tokyo to seek a career as a manga artist.
Space opera
Leiji Matsumoto achieved considerable reputation as the author of space operas like Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato. Exotic settings and a somber atmosphere, as well as noble protagonists and lovely heroines, morally complex themes, and occasionally tragic tales, all characterized his writing. He also favored heroic figures who were noble and attractive.
Wife
His wife, Miyako Maki, a shjo manga artist, is better known as the creator of the Licca-chan doll, the Japanese version of Barbie.
Cause Of Death
On November 15, 2019, Matsumoto took part in a celebration honoring the Captain Harlock anime adaptation’s 40th anniversary in Turin, Italy. The event had to be cancelled because Matsumoto fell and experienced serious respiratory issues during it. As he was transported to the hospital, he was in severe condition, and soon after being admitted to the emergency room, a breathing tube was inserted into him. However it was found that he was no longer in any immediate danger after two days.
Leiji Matsumoto, who was 85 years old, died of sudden heart failure at a Tokyo hospital on February 13, 2023.
