Anthony Wameli, the director of the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) legal division, died suddenly after he was hospitalized in 2021.
On Wednesday afternoon, Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, the leader of the NUP party, announced the passing of Anthony Wameli. The declaration reads,
“Such a sad day! We recently received news of Comrade Wameli Anthony, our dear brother and the head of our legal team, passing away unexpectedly while receiving treatment in the United States. Information will be sent in due time. I pray for eternal peace for his soul, Kyagulanyi says.
In 2021, Wameli was rushed to St. Anthony Medical Center in Kasangati, Wakiso district due to stomach problems.
At the time, his wife Olive Wameli claimed that the lawyer was mute. A few weeks later, in June 2021, the attorney was flown to the Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts in the United States of America.
Who was Anthony Wameli?
Anthony Wamelin was an important human rights attorney. He was the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) former head of the legal division and a former contender for Namisindwa County MP.
The human rights lawyer and pastor of Ebenezer Christian Fellowship in Kanyanya, Mr. Wameli, rose to prominence in 2017 when he took on the prosecution of those accused of killing former police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi.
Wameli testified in court on behalf of several NUP sympathizers and other citizens, including Jamilu Mukulu, a former ADF rebel leader, suspects in the murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, and suspects in the attempted murder of Gen. Katumba Wamala.
The human rights attorney won the Uganda Law Society’s award for criminal defense lawyer of the year in September 2021 as a result of legal strategies.
He created Wameli and Company Advocates and held the position of managing partner.
Charles Olim, a well-known figure in Kampala who goes by the nickname Sipapa, and his wife Shamilah Nakiyemba are being defended by his law firm on charges of aggravated robbery and money laundering before the Makindye magistrates court.
He founded and currently serves as managing partner of Wameli & Co. Advocates, which has recruited more than 300 advocates and currently employs eight lawyers.
In his more than ten years practicing law, he defended suspects accused of terrorism.
Before departing, he spent nearly three years working as a Magistrate Grade One in the Nakasongola Chief Magistrate’s Court.
Anthony Wameli Cause of Death
Wameli’s best friend Geoffrey Turyamusiima later disclosed to media that Wameli had been dealing with severe peptic ulcers for weeks, which he believed may have contributed to his health deteriorating.
A few weeks later, he was transferred to Kampala, and after that, to Boston Medical Center in Massachusetts, where he reportedly discovered he had stage-four colon cancer. His lymph nodes and lungs were also affected by his malignancy.
On February 8, 2023, he passed away after a nearly two-year battle with cancer. After the news of the passing spread, tributes poured online.
